About TheUnrulyMaker

TheUnrulyMaker is written and run by a maker in Alabama who operates a small shop built around a 100W CO2 laser engraver and 3D printers, sells laser engraving designs and digital files on Etsy (shop name: TheUnrulyMaker), and spends the rest of the week doing contracting work. This site is where the gear research from that shop gets written down.

Why this site exists

Buying a first laser is confusing. Spec sheets exaggerate, "best of" lists repeat each other, and the machine that's perfect for cutting 3mm plywood signs is wrong for engraving tumblers all day. These guides exist to answer the questions a real buyer asks — what will it cut, what else do I have to buy, what breaks, and what does it cost to own — in plain language.

How the guides are researched

Comparisons are built from manufacturer specifications, current retailer listings, and reports from owners in maker forums and groups. That is research, not lab testing, and the guides say so. When a machine is actually running in our shop, the guide gets updated with first-hand notes and marked as such. Prices are quoted as typical ranges from multiple retailers, checked monthly, because laser gear goes on sale constantly and a single "price" would be fiction.

How the site makes money

Some product links are affiliate links: if you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That never buys a recommendation — picks are made on specs, owner sentiment, and value first. The details are on the affiliate disclosure page. The Etsy design shop is separate and linked only where a guide naturally calls for project files.
